about

In this song, the mean temperature for each year from the past 139 years is sonified, in order. The synths rise in pitch slowly over the length of the song, just as the temperature has risen slowly since humanity began burning fossil fuels. Scientists believe that the average temperature of the Earth will continue to rise 3-9 more degrees fahrenheight during the 21st century. While this may not seem like much of a change, even this small increase in temperatures has caused radical changes for our natural world. This change has led to habitat loss, water shortages, and food insecurity around the world. These effects will only become more extreme. These changes have already led to an increase in heat waves, droughts, and wildfires around the world. As the temperature of the Earth continues to rise, we will see more of this extreme weather. Higher average temperatures also cause more frequent and more intense storms of all types - hurricanes, tornados, rain, and snow. The past five years have been the five warmest years on record (and 2019 is on pace to continue this pattern) and the 20 warmest years on record have occurred over the last 22 years.
