On Above a Burning Earth, Diegetic converts the data of our rapidly changing climate into songs that tell the story of a world distorted by human touch. In the same way, these songs begin with a soft soundscape of sonified climate data, which is then distorted by human-played instrumentation.

All songs on this release were created by sonifying publicly available climate data. For all songs, the process prioritized the sonification of data first, with human instrumentation laid over these pieces. In this method, the sounds of the data dictated the key, the structure, and the overall mood of the music. The sonified data began as a pure interpretation of our world around us, which was then warped and molded by human touch. This mirrors humanity's impact on our natural world.

I always publish all the code I use to create my music. I built the code for this data sonification project in the Jython Environment for Music (Glacial Mass was done in Supercollider).
