about

In this song, I sonified the total number of hurricanes per year for the past eighty years. Hurricanes have increased in frequency and intensity since the 1970s. Scientists largely attribute this to warming ocean temperatures and rising sea levels as a result of global warming. It is likely that this will continue, leading to greater flooding, more deaths, and a larger economic cost from hurricanes around the world. As mentioned before, this will disproportionately impact island nations, coastal communities, and countries in the global south, despite their smaller contribution to greenhouse gases. On our warming planet, hurricanes in the future will have higher wind speeds and greater levels of precipitation. Due to a higher average temperature, the hurricane season will be longer as well.
