For Glacial Mass, the melody is created by sonifying a random measurement of the glacial mass for one year from the past 100 years for each note. The retreat of glaciers in recent history is one of the most visually striking indications of human-caused climate change. Within a lifetime, glaciers around the world have shrunk to a fraction of their original size. This loss of glacial mass has and will continue to have drastic impacts on the natural ecosystem and on humanity. Glaciers help to regulate the temperature of streams. As these glaciers recede, the temperature of these streams, habitats to unique and delicate species, rise and become uninhabitable. These shrinking glaciers also cause floods and debris flows, displacing both wildlife and humans. Glaciers also act as giant freezers, preserving ancient microbial life. As these glaciers melt, bacteria that has been extinct for millenia is released into the atmosphere. This could lead to plagues of ancient diseases that we have never before encountered. Melting ice sheets also release tons of methane into the air. Methane, a greenhouse gas, increases the speed at which our atmosphere warms. In other words, the more glaciers melt, the faster they will melt in the future.
